Mother’s Day is such a special holiday for all: moms, grandmas, husbands, and children. The importance of Mother’s Day is felt by all whether you are a mom, have a mom, or are married to someone who is the mother to your children. It’s a time to show the moms in your life how much you love them and appreciate them! This year Mother’s Day is on May 9, 2021 and so to prepare we wanted to share with you some of the history as well as the importance of Mother’s Day to Petals & Pinot!
History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day started in 1908 by Anna Jarvis and then became an official U.S holiday in 1914. Due to the commercialization of the holiday though, Jarvis tried to get the holiday removed from the calendars (lucky for us, it didn’t work- we like this holiday!) Celebrating mothers has always been a thing- the ancient Greeks and Romans held festivals for. There was also the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” These early traditions eventually transitioned to mirror the American Mother’s Day traditions that are followed today.
When Jarvis first started Mother’s Day, she worked with the floral industry to first promote this holiday. It’s no surprise that flowers are still a favorite to send to our moms on Mother’s Day. Between flowers, cards, and yummy brunches there are so many ways to show our moms how much we appreciate them. We think Mothers’ Day is a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the women who make it all possible every single day!
Allow us to introduce ourselves if you aren’t familiar with Petals & Pinot! My name is Cameron, and I am the owner and creative director at Petals & Pinot. I began working in the floral industry over 18 years ago while in high School. After graduation I attended The College of Business Administration (COBA) at Abilene Christian University. Once I graduated with my BBA I got right to work in the floral industry.
From 2009-2014 I was fortunate enough to work and manage 2 different floral departments for Market Street. During this time, I was able to really see how to manage and operate a floral business. In 2014 I took a break and decided to focus on family, and in 2015 my husband and I welcomed our first child, on Valentine’s day to be exact (every florist’s favorite holiday!!). In 2018, with two kids ages 3 & 6 months I took a leap of faith and decided to open Petals & Pinot, in my very own home.
When Petals & Pinot first opened, we offered floral design classes in my kitchen or we traveled and took the classes into people’s homes and taught groups how to create their very own floral creations. In 2019, my mom Rachel joined me as my co-owner and financial director and helped me to grow the company into what is it today. Now we have a location in Lewisville, Texas where we not only host BYOB classes but also house a full-service floral design company! We can create arrangements for any occasion: anniversaries, birthdays, everyday bouquets, funerals, weddings, or whatever your heart desires. Since both of us are mothers, we truly understand and appreciate the importance of Mother’s Day and the significance behind the arrangements we make for moms.
It’s been such a blessing being able to work side-by-side with my mother and having her help me along the way. Her guidance has played such a role in creating what Petals & Pinot is today! I couldn’t have done it without her love and support- as well the support of my husband!
