As prom is approaching it’s time to start thinking about all of the prom things: dresses, hair/make-up, your date, and of course your corsage and boutonniere. Prom floral traditions are a tradition that has stayed the same since the beginning with classic designs and beautiful flowers. As time has gone on we have seen these prom floral traditions add in new things such as handheld bouquets and colorful ribbons, making it tricky to know just what to get for your date. But Petals and Pinot is here to help with your prom flower needs!
When picking out your prom flowers there are a few specific things you need to know:
-What colors your date is wearing
-What flowers they like
-Where your date will wear it
Most men will choose to wear a boutonniere that is pinned to their jacket while women have a variety of options: a corsage on their wrist, pinned to their dress, or even in their hair, or a handheld bouquet. This is why it’s important to ask your date their preference so that you know just what to pick out when ordering your prom flowers.
When we start designing the corsage and boutonniere we will find out what color your date’s dress is so that we can find the best ribbons and rose color to compliment their dress. At Petals and Pinot we offer handheld bouquets too that can be fully customized to your date’s desires. This twist on the normal traditional corsage is a great way to stand-out and be completely unique! It also looks amazing in pictures!
You’re probably wondering when and why prom flowers became a tradition. Corsages have been a tradition for centuries and was originally called a ‘bouquet de corsage’ and was a small bouquet worn on the bodice of a woman at any important event. Corsages have been at many different ceremonies and events which is how it of course started to be worn at proms too. At the start of the 20th century is when it became a tradition for men to court young women by presenting them with their corsages at their home before a special event, aka prom. At this time, most corsages were pinned to dresses but over time we have seen this change into wrist corsages. While prom is our busiest time for making corsages and boutonnieres, we also make them year round for weddings and other special events – like daddy-daughter dances!
