A floral company talking about houseplants. Huh? Yes! Petals and Pinot sells houseplants as well, and they actually make great gifts for your loved ones! National Houseplant Appreciation Day is on January 10th, so we wanted to help shine the light on these awesome plants and share some tips and benefits to owning houseplants! What many people don’t know is that houseplants feed off the energy that you provide, so it’s important to show houseplant appreciation in your daily interactions with them if you want to keep them alive.
Since January 10th is all about houseplant appreciation, we want to share with you how to truly show appreciation for your houseplants. If you’ve always been a plant connoisseur these are probably some things that you enjoy doing on a daily to weekly basis already. But, if not, we hope you will try them out!
Get One: This is probably the first step you should take if you don’t already have a house plant! We love to support local shops, like our own, so you should start there!
Gift One: Because gifting for others is better than gifting yourself! In fact, we sell house plants on our website! Just order on-line and we can deliver to a friend or you can pick up in store. Some easy go-to plants are succulents and Mother-in-Laws tongue (aka Snake plant).
Have Fun: Plants are meant to be fun! Show your plant some love today by picking out a new holder/vase for it and dressing it up a little!
Name Them: Ok, this one is kind of a joke but it’s still fun. The easiest ways to name your plants is to coordinate with what type of plant it is (ex. Money the Monstera, Figgy the Fiddle Leaf Fig).
Take Care of Them: Plants might seem easy, but they do need love and care. Be sure to water them as needed, feed if needed, cut off brown spots, and take inside/outside as needed. Some plants don’t do well outside if it’s too hot so keep that in mind when picking a home for your plants.
Words of Kindness: Much like people, plants like to hear nice things. It’s not weird to talk to your plants and encourage them to grow- it truly does help! They are living creatures after all; they do respond well to the positive vibes that you give them. Talking or singing to your plants creates carbon dioxide, which houseplants then convert to oxygen. Producing more oxygen inside your home will help improve your inside air quality.
Besides being pretty to look at and a fun hobby, plants have many benefits. And with the proper love and care, these plants can be something you have for years and years to enjoy.
Health Benefits: Plants in your home can play a huge role in your overall health. They can help both your mental health and your physical health. Plants can provide mental clarity for you; they can bring you a sense of peace and calmness throughout your day. They also release oxygen into the air which is great for your body and hormone productions. That’s not the only things that plants release though. They also have phytoncides and other airborne chemicals that are released into your home that can help to reduce your stress levels. Less stress equals a boosted immune system! Many of these benefits are something you might not notice right away but they are all working to heal your mind and body.
Improved Air Quality: Just like plants can release oxygen and airborne chemicals that help your body, they can also help your home! It’s very easy for bacteria and viruses to live around your home and get trapped. Opening windows helps of course, but plants help as well! The airborne chemicals they release can help to fight the pollutants in the air! Healthier air in your home will also help your immune system since you won’t be breathing in nasty bacteria.
Many Everyday Uses: Depending on the type of plants you decide to care for, you can use them in your day-to-day life. You can grow things like an aloe vera plant which can help with sunburnt skin, cuts, and other minor burns or you can grow herbs like cilantro for cooking.
Productivity: This will definitely come down to your own personal preferences, so it will not be the same for everyone. Plants coupled with your home décor created a more motivational work environment than surroundings that are dull and blank. If you are working in an area that is boring to you, you’re probably not going to be motivated to continue working. It’s all about your mindset!
As you can see, plants can provide so many benefits for you and your family! And if plants aren’t your thing, don’t worry!
