Everyone loves to have a one-of-a-kind centerpiece for the holidays. If you can’t make it to one of our fabulous floral classes, try making your own DIY centerpiece for the holidays at home! With so many different styles, there are many routes you can take for this project. You can keep it classic, go rustic, spice it up a bit, or keep it chic. No matter what your taste is, we have some awesome tips for creating your own DIY centerpiece for your table.
Whether this centerpiece is for Christmas or a random special occasion, the arrangement on your table can help set the entire atmosphere for the room and create warmth and ambience. This focal piece shows the amount of thought you’ve put into this special occasion and often makes for a great discussion point. You want it to make a statement! Everything you do will be based around this piece, so you must keep several factors in mind.
If you have one long table that everyone sits at it might be a good idea to have to two smaller centerpieces at each side of the table, rather than one in the middle. If you will be having multiple small tables where people dine and then a large table with all of the food, you could plan to have a larger centerpiece where the food sits and then smaller ones on each table that compliment each other. Either way, you will need to keep size in mind when creating this piece. If it’s too tall, your guests won’t be able to see each other. If it’s too round or wide, your guests won’t have as much table space. Be sure to keep this in mind as you are designing your centerpiece.
Since it is the holidays, we are going to highlight winter centerpieces. When spring and summer rolls around, you can try out most of these same tips with fresh spring and summer flowers!
Add-Ins: There are so many fun things you can add in to your centerpiece. For a winter or holiday arrangement, we recommend pinecones, faux wooden leaves (you can paint these gold or silver!), holly, ribbon, or even ornaments.
Cool & Warm Tones: No, not together. If you’re looking to create a more fall arrangement you will want to stick to reds, oranges, and yellows. For a more wintery bouquet you should pick whites, blues, and silvers with fresh greenery. You don’t want your centerpiece to clash so pick which season you are going for and start with those colors. Common flowers used in fall centerpieces are yellow daisies, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, and roses.
Shape & Size: As mentioned above, you have to be cautious about the size so that everyone around the table can still be visible and have plenty of space. Also, when designing the piece, you will need to make sure it’s well balanced. What do we mean? Do you want to it to be symmetrical or asymmetrical? A symmetrical arrangement is going to be equal all the way around while an asymmetrical arrangement will not be completely equal on each side- but all sides will have visual interest. To do this, you will balance out your colors by putting your heavier colors at the lower half and your lighter colors near the top.
Table Décor: Having a centerpiece that matches your table is crucial. You don’t want to have a fall centerpiece but red and green table place settings. Before deciding on the colors for your arrangement, take a look at the décor you can plan to use for that event. Pick flowers that will compliment well with this décor, not clash.
Vase: Most people don’t realize the importance of a good vase. Besides the fact that it holds the entire centerpiece, it can actually play a large role in the décor. Clear vases are always an easy choice, but make sure you clean up the leaves and water before placing out on the big day. Other ideas are finding a holiday vase or color that will accent well with your piece. You can even paint one yourself to make it unique and match perfectly.
