Celebrating Thanksgiving with Flowers

Pumpkins, pilgrims, and plenty of fall flowers are the perfect accent for the Thanksgiving season. From the first Thanksgiving feasts in the 1600s to the family gatherings we still enjoy, November is a month full of gratitude and celebration. Fall color adorns tree-lined roads along with the reds, yellows, and oranges of autumn flowers.

It is reported that the first Thanksgiving occurred in 1621 as a 3-day feast celebrating the great harvest with the Pilgrims and Native Americans. In 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation during his presidency that established Thanksgiving Day as the last Thursday in November. Up until 1863 Thanksgiving had been celebrated, but on different dates around the United States. President Franklin Roosevelt established Thanksgiving as a national holiday to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November – and this is when we celebrate it today! Interestingly, Roosevelt wanted to move the holiday up by one week because he thought it would jump start retail sales and the economy during the Great Depression. But before you begin looking to the holiday season of poinsettias and Christmas wreaths, enjoy the beauty of autumn flowers for Thanksgiving!

Fall flowers that make the perfect gift are chrysanthemums, delphiniums, orange roses, and sunflowers. A mixture of these flowers will provide a beautiful table arrangement or room bouquet for the entire month of November. There are many fun ways to celebrate Thanksgiving with flowers!

• Bring them to Thanksgiving dinner. A fresh flower arrangement is the perfect way to thank your Thanksgiving Day host for inviting you over a for delicious meal. (Plus, you don’t want to arrive empty-handed). Even if you arrive with a food dish to add to the table, a delightful floral bouquet can be enjoyed as table center piece! Plus, flowers will last days after the meal is over for your host to enjoy. Consider taking a small house plant that can last for years!
• Cornucopias. Known as the “Horn of Plenty”, a cornucopia is a hollow, horn-shaped wicker basket that is often filled with items such as fruit, flowers, corn, small pumpkins, squash, nuts, etc. It symbolizes abundance and a full harvest which is why you see them during the Thanksgiving season. Cornucopias with fall flowers provide eye-catching table center pieces and conversation starters!
• Take a BYOB floral class. At Petals and Pinot, we offer several fall floral design workshops! Grab your girlfriends, moms, sisters, and significant others for a fun fall floral class! Our DIY floral design workshops include all that you need (clippers, vase, flowers, etc.) to create your very own real/fresh floral arrangement. During the class we will explain the specifics of certain flowers, how to properly trim and take care of the flowers and give you all the basics to keep your flowers thriving! The event can even be considered an early Christmas gift! All workshops are a BYOB event so grab your favorite bottle of wine and join us!
• Can I send flowers for Thanksgiving? Yes!! If you are not able to spend Thanksgiving Day with your family or friends, send them a flower arrangement to show your love and gratitude. Make sure you order early so it can be delivered before Thanksgiving Day and enjoyed throughout the week.
