September is here which means it’s time to celebrate our September birthdays. If you are born in the month of September your birth flowers are the Aster and the Morning Glory. When ordering your loved one’s birthday flowers this month, try adding in these two beautiful flowers!
Aster is a blooming herb seen in the fall. It symbolizes love, faith, and wisdom. It is commonly used to celebrate 20th wedding anniversaries. Aster blooms into beautiful shades of pinks, reds, white, lilac and mauve. You will most commonly see purple asters, which signify royalty and wisdom. White asters symbolize innocence and purity and represent new beginnings. Pink asters represent love and sensitivity, and red asters show an undying devotion.
Many people thing aster looks similar to the daisy, but it is actually a relative to the sunflower. The aster has hundreds of different species but the most popular is the Monte Casino. Because the aster is such a happy and positive flower, it’s said to be able to ward off evil spirits and negative energy. Better keep this flower around to steer clear!
The aster was named after the Greek work for ‘star’ as the shape of its flower head resembles a star. A Greek legend also tells us that the goddess of innocence, Astraea, went to live in the heavens as the constellation Virgo. During this time a flood covered earth. Two humans survived on Mt. Parnassus because the flood did not reach them. Astraea created starlight to guide them and as she did this she wept with pity. Her tears landed on earth and in those locations the flower asters grew.
In ancient times the aster was used for medicinal purposes. People would also smoke and burn aster to get rid of negative energy. Native tribes would use them as treatment against muscle pain, headaches, and cold, and flu. You also would see asters placed on graves of French soldiers to represent the end of a battle. Our favorite though was during the Victorian era in England when people would send coded messages with flowers- the aster would signify someone’s love and devotion to the recipient.
The morning glory is a beautiful and unique flower that is great for our September birthdays! This little flower is full of color and represents love, affection, and longing. It is also used as the 11th wedding anniversary flower. Their name is fitting because this flower tends to bloom early in the morning and then curls up and dies later that day. It can also have vines that can grow as high as 15 feet tall! This trumpet-shaped flower can be found in pink, purple, blue, red, or white. Like most times, the white morning glory symbolizes purity and innocence. A red morning glory signifies a strong heart while the pink one symbolizes love and romance. Blue morning glories show deep emotions, infinite love, and respect and a purple morning glory symbolizes beauty and royalty. You will often see butterflies and hummingbirds hanging around this beautiful flower!
Like all flowers, the morning glory has a long history with many different legends about it. Besides being used for medicine for years in China, it also has symbolized a variety of things. In an old Chinese legend, morning glories represented the one day a year where Chien Nie and Chih Neu, forbidden lovers, were allowed to meet and be together. The legend states that these two upset the gods because they were neglecting their duties just to be together. Therefore, in the Chinese tradition, when these flowers bloom it is supposed to signify a single day for lovers to meet.
In the Victorian era, morning glories were placed above gravestones as a symbol of remembrance and never-ending love for those who have passed. They can also be seen in Christianity representing unavoidable morality of all living beings. The sun, when the flower is alive, represents our time alive and then night-time is symbolic of death. Still though, the morning glory makes for a beautiful floral gift!
