October is upon us which means it’s time to start celebrating people with October birthdays with their birth flowers! If your birthday is in October, then your birth month flowers are cosmos and marigolds!
Known for their vibrant shades and starry appearance, cosmos make for a great October birthday! They are a member of the Aster family and have daisy-like petals. Cosmos are said to represent balance, tranquility, peace, love, modesty, and joy. Like most flowers, they come in a variety of colors and all colors have their own meaning. Red cosmos symbolize love and passion, pink is often said to represent a mother’s love, and yellow is to show friendship. Last, but not least, white cosmos symbolize faithfulness and devotion. This makes white cosmos the perfect anniversary flower. In fact, cosmos are the official 2nd wedding anniversary flower.
There are over 20 different species of cosmos flowers, some of which can go 5 feet tall or more! You will find them outside in a garden or plucked and beautifully arranged into a floral bouquet. When planted outside they will attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Cosmos were brought to Spain from Mexico during the 16th century and then in the 18th century they made their way to England. In the mid-19th century, they started being seen in the United States. While they were not in Greece during the Ancient Greek mythology times, their name does still come from the Greek word kosmos. The word kosmos in Greek mythology represents order and perfect harmony in nature. Cosmos are known for having ‘orderly petals’ which is how Spanish priests came up with this name for them. Cosmos are thought to be good luck and able to remove negative energy and spiritual blockers.
Marigolds are the perfect flower for our fall birthdays! They are vibrant daisy-like flowers that come in shades of bright orange, red, gold, and yellow. Marigolds are a very popular flower in Mexico and Latin America because of their use during Day of the Dead. They are often used as decoration for household alters and cemetery graves to remember family members who have passed. You also will them playing a role in Hindu religious ceremonies as a symbol of surrender and an offering to God.
Depending on the color of marigold you are gifting, it will have different symbolism so it’s important to pick out a color with accurate symbolism for the person you are giving them to. Orange marigolds, the most popular ones, symbolize passion and creativity. Their warm fiery hues also represent warmth, happiness, joy, optimism, and good luck. You might have even heard people call them the “herb of the sun” due to their yellow, orange, and red shades!
The marigold first got its name with the Aztecs who considered them to be sacred and magical flowers. They were then brought over to Spain with early Spanish explorers who started to grow them in monastery gardens. Marigold seeds then reached Fance, northern Africa, and then eventually America after several hundred years. The Aztecs would use marigold for religious and medicinal purposes. It’s said that they used them to cure hiccups and even to treat someone who has been struck by lightning.
Marigolds have seen several names throughout their history. The most common, and the one that stuck, originated from “Mary’s Gold” because the Virgin Mary’s alter received marigolds as an offering rather than coins. In the UK they were called “Rose of the Indies” and then in India they were known as The Friendship Flower.
